The Weekly Flush

Flushin’ Friday: Are You Smarter Than Your Toilet?

From our newsletter archive. Promotions and giveaways in this issue have ended. Contact us for service.

(Spoiler: most people aren’t.)

Your toilet has one job. You? You’re juggling kids, work, and wondering why your garbage disposal smells like old tacos. Let’s see if you actually know more about plumbing than the porcelain throne.

Plumbing IQ Questions

Q1: Flushable wipes are safe for your pipes.

❌ False. They leave the toilet, sure. But they don’t break down. Somewhere underground there’s a wipe army plotting its next clog.

Q2: Lemons clean your garbage disposal.

⚖ Half True. They make it smell nice, but they don’t remove buildup. Think of it as spraying perfume on a skunk. Use vinegar ice cubes for a real scrub.

Q3: Toilets can waste gallons of water a day without you noticing.

✅ True. A bad flapper can silently drain thousands of gallons a year. Test it with food coloring in the tank. If the color shows up in the bowl without flushing, you’ve got a sneaky leak.

Q4: Pouring hot grease down the drain is safe if you chase it with hot water.

❌ False. You just made a bacon-scented candle inside your pipes.

Q5: A dripping faucet is no big deal.

❌ False. One drip per second = over 3,000 gallons wasted a year. That’s a small swimming pool you’re paying for and never using.

 Tip of the Week:
The Toilet Test

Add a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank and wait 15 minutes.

If the color creeps into the bowl, you’ve got a silent leak.

It’s one of the easiest water-saving checks you can do.

Q: What’s really in your water?

  • A) Just H₂O

  • B) Bonus minerals (a.k.a. rock flakes)

  • C) A splash of chlorine, mystery metals, and a hint of hose flavor

Answer: C. Always C.

No guessing. No gimmicks. Just the truth about what you’re drinking, showering in, and filling your kids’ water bottles with.

Then we install the fix:

  • Whole-home softeners that keep your skin and hair happy

  • Reverse osmosis for drinking water so pure it makes bottled water jealous

  • Filtration systems that protect your pipes and appliances

Think of it as your “Water IQ Upgrade.”

Maintenance Minute:

Bonus Points for Plumbing IQ

✅ Keep a real plunger (not duct tape dreams)

✅ Flush your water heater once a year to prevent “hot rust soup”

✅ Run water in little-used sinks to keep traps from drying out

✅ Use strainers in kitchen and shower drains. Hairballs aren’t pets

 Leaky Laugh of the Week

Q: Why did the faucet break up with the sink?

A: Too much pressure.

Weird Thing We Found This Week:

Someone tried to unclog their sink with a jump rope.

Spoiler: now it’s a clogged sink with a jump rope inside
