How to shut off the water in a plumbing emergency
Stopping the water is the single biggest thing you can do before a plumber arrives. Start at the closest valve and work back toward the main.
- Fixture valves: under each sink, behind each toilet, and behind the washer. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops.
- Water heater: close the cold-water valve on the pipe above the heater, and turn off its gas or power if the house water will stay off.
